I am Dr. Miklós Varga. I am both a veterinarian and a naturopath. I graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest in 1984 and later earned a qualification as a Naturopath Nutritionist from the College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM) in Manchester in 2012.
I have had the privilege of working as a veterinarian across diverse fields, including farm animal practice, food hygiene, and as a veterinary official, alongside caring for pets in both Hungary and England.
Back in 2008-2009, when I first encountered medicinal mushrooms during my studies at CNM College, they were still largely unknown. There was very little firsthand experience available, most of what we had came from sparse literature, and obtaining these mushrooms was nearly impossible. It’s almost incredible to think that all this took place just over a decade ago.
Around that time, a previously unknown Malaysian company entered the Hungarian market with its Ganoderma products. I reached out to them and went on to establish a Ganoderma service centre in England. Concurrently, I ran a small Herbal Health Food Store called Health-Vitality.
Though I soon returned to veterinary practice full-time, my passion for medicinal mushrooms and the service centre remained a cherished hobby.
Fast forward ten years, and Ganoderma along with other medicinal mushrooms have experienced a remarkable rise, not only in Hungary but globally. The wealth of scientific literature on their health benefits has grown so extensive that their significance can no longer be ignored. Reishi and its fellow mushrooms have begun a journey reminiscent of the transformative impact penicillin had in the 20th century, positioning medicinal mushrooms as a groundbreaking force for health in the 21st century.
Their effects are remarkably gentle. What impresses me most are the medicinal mushrooms known as adaptogens. These substances are completely non-toxic and free from harmful side effects. Rather than targeting a specific issue, they locate areas of imbalance within the body and support those systems, much like an engine tester identifies faults.
In today’s modern world, where food quality is declining and pollution affects every corner of our environment, the rise in chronic diseases is no surprise.
The prevailing understanding is that medicinal mushrooms primarily support the immune system. This makes sense, as the immune system is under constant assault in modern life, and the consequences of its weakened function are often severe and visible.
However, medicinal mushrooms do much more, they help restore harmony to metabolic processes, each influencing the body in unique ways and varying degrees. Because they act at the cellular level, their normalizing effect is complex and non-specific; they always guide the body’s metabolism toward adaptive energy and balance.
Their wide-ranging benefits extend to nearly all organ systems: digestive, respiratory, circulatory, excretory, nervous, endocrine, and importantly, the immune system.
From 2006 to 2020, I was a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and the British Veterinary Association. Working primarily in small animal practices, I had limited opportunities to explore unusual or entirely new treatment approaches like these.
I returned to Hungary in 2019 and settled near Győr, where I soon became acquainted with Naja Forest Kft. This innovative company in Győr produces the world’s pioneering organic liquid mushroom extracts. Their products are chitin-free and contain only organic glycerine along with standardized amounts of the mushrooms’ active ingredients. Over the years, we have developed a successful partnership, and I am both grateful for our collaboration and proud of the achievements we have made together.
In Hungary, I established my own pet clinic, and drawing on my experience with Ganoderma and the expanding body of research, I continued to develop the medicinal mushroom ‘brand’ specifically for the pet care field. I enjoy being among the pioneers in emerging areas. Today, HerbalVet operates in several countries, with our original Hungarian website www.herbalvet.hu serving as the central hub, alongside partner sites in English www.best2pets.com and German www.best2pets.de. Unfortunately, I closed my clinic on January 1, 2025—such is the course of life.
In Austria, the Tyroler Glückpilze MRCA Mushroom Research Center Austria GmbH has been cultivating exceptionally high-quality raw materials for nearly two decades. We have sourced the vast majority of our mushrooms from them for a long time. In 2025, our products began to be manufactured by their newly established subsidiary in Innsbruck, MELT Mushroom Extraction Lab Tyrol GmbH.
As a veterinarian, it gives me great satisfaction to say, based on my experience, that the therapeutic benefits of medicinal mushrooms proven in humans can be just as effectively applied to our companion animals. The wealth of positive feedback we’ve received is a strong testament that we are on the right path.
